National Community Attitudes towards Violence against Women Survey 2009

25/11/2009

Findings of the survey now released.

In conjunction with the Prime Minister, the Hon Kevin Rudd MP, the Minister for the Status of Women, the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP has released the National Community Attitudes towards Violence against Women Survey 2009.

This survey was conducted by the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth), in partnership with the Australian Institute of Criminology and the Social Research Centre, on behalf of the Australian Government.

The survey was conducted with a broad cross-section of the Australian community, with approximately 10,000 people participating.  The survey included 16 and 17-year-olds with parental consent, telephone interviews with 2,500 members of the Italian, Greek, Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian communities and face-to-face interviews with 400 Indigenous Australians.

Understanding community attitudes is important for shaping and influencing future initiatives to prevent violence against women.  The survey establishes a benchmark against which changes in attitudes can be closely monitored over time.  The results will guide the development and targeting of interventions that build cultures of non-violence and equal and respectful relationships between men and women.
