Recognition & Representation 

  •  National Indigenous Representative Body - Update November 2009

    The Australian Government is committed to setting up a national Indigenous representative body to give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people a voice in national affairs and policy development.

  •  The National Apology

    On 13 February 2008 the Prime Minister moved a motion of Apology to Australia's Indigenous peoples with specific reference to the Stolen Generations.

  •  NAIDOC Week

    The department funds NAIDOC week and supports the National NAIDOC Committee in organising national celebrations, including the poster competition, ball and awards

  •  Public Awareness Program

    The Public Awareness Program (PAP) funds initiatives that raise public awareness in the wider community of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues and culture

  •  International Issues

    The Australian Government supports Indigenous Australians to participate in international forums, including those under the auspices of the United Nations (UN).

  •  International Repatriation Program

    This program facilitates the return of Indigenous human remains held in overseas collections to their communities of origin.
