Nominate someone extraordinary for the 2009 National Disability Awards!

Nominations for the 2009 National Disability Awards will close on Friday 22 May. Does someone remarkable spring to mind? Nominate them for an award today!

Do you know someone, with or without disability, who has:

• improved or advanced the lives of people with disability?
• created an environment inclusive for people with disability?
• helped raise awareness of disability issues?
• been a leader in the disability sector?
• challenged or lobbied for equal rights for people with disability?
• created opportunities for people with disability to participate in any area of the community?
• broken down barriers or set an example through their participation in the community?

Then why not nominate them for a National Disability Award?

We would like to hear about the people who are making a difference to the lives of people with disability and people with disability who have achieved something great!

Award categories

There are five new Award categories in 2009:

• Minister's Lifelong Achievement Award - Person, over 25 years of age, with or without disability who has demonstrated a sustained and extraordinary personal commitment to improving and/or reshaping the lives of people with disability.
• Disability Rights Young Leader Award - Young Person, 12-25 years of age, with disability who has raised awareness and shown outstanding leadership in improving the lives of people with disability.
• Business Award - Person with or without disability who has displayed an innovative approach and achieved substantial outcomes, in advancing the lives of people with disability in areas such as transport, housing, communication and technology. No age limit.
• Local Government Award - Person who has challenged or lobbied, and has succeeded in implementing substantial change by breaking down barriers faced by people with disability. No age limit.
• Social Inclusion Award - Person who has worked towards a more inclusive environment by creating opportunities for people with disability to participate in areas such as sport, the arts, education and the wider community. No age limit.

Nomination forms and nomination guidelines can be downloaded at www.idpwd.com.au or ordered by phoning 1800 440 385.

If you know someone you think deserves the recognition of a National Disability Award, but are not sure which category to nominate for, email idpwd@fahcsia.gov.au or phone1800 440 385.

Nominations close at 5.00pm AEST on Friday 22 May 2009.

Awards ceremony

The 2009 award finalists will travel to the National Disability Awards Ceremony at Parliament House, in Canberra on 23 November 2009. Award finalists will meet the Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, and the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children’s Services.

An award recipient for each category will be announced at the ceremony.
