Harmonisation of disability parking permit schemes in Australia

What we are not consulting about

The following issues are not part of this consultation process:

  1. The number of disability parking spaces and their dimensions is the subject of proposals in draft Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards under the Disability Discrimination Act (see clause D3.5 of the draft Premises Standards). The draft standards were tabled in Parliament by the Attorney-General in December 2008 and referred to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs for review and report. The Committee has called for public comments and is holding public hearings. The draft standards and associated documents are available on the Attorney-General's Department website and on the committee’s website.
  2. The design of the International Symbol for Access (ISA). This is an international standard.
  3. Administration of each scheme. This is the responsibility of each state and territory. This includes the processes and forms used to assess eligibility and for enforcement arrangements.
  4. All other rules and policies that currently apply in your jurisdiction will remain the same. You will receive a copy of the existing rules and arrangements for the disability parking permit scheme in your jurisdiction so you can see what the proposed changes will mean for permit holders in your area.
  5. The application process will continue to involve an assessment by a health professional based upon a person’s functional ability.
