Harmonisation of Disability Parking Permit Schemes in Australia

The Australian Government announced $3 million in the 2009/10 Federal Budget to develop an Australian Disability Parking Scheme. The scheme will provide a new permit that is recognised nationally and will improve the rules around its use.

On 26 May 2009 the Parliamentary Secretary for Disability and Children’s Services, the Hon Bill Shorten MP, launched a discussion paper outlining proposals for the scheme.

Consultation meetings were then held nationally and a submission process ran until 31 July 2009 for interested stakeholders. Views expressed in all submissions received by 31 July 2009 will be taken into account when the final Australian Disability Parking Scheme proposals are developed for disability ministers and roads/transport ministers.

On 6 November 2009 the agreed design for the Australian Disability Parking Permit was launched by The Hon Bill Shorten MP.
