The Australian Government announced $3 million in the 2009/10 Federal Budget to develop an Australian Disability Parking Scheme.
On 26 May 2009 the Parliamentary Secretary for Disability and Children's Services, the Hon Bill Shorten MP, launched a discussion paper outlining proposals for the scheme.
The discussion paper and nineteen consultation meetings supported a national submission process between 2 June and the 31 July 2009 for interested stakeholders. A summary of the views expressed in the 687 submissions has been developed in a report.
On 6 November 2009 the agreed design for the Australian Disability Parking Permit was launched by The Hon Bill Shorten MP.
