Warlpiri and Kartangarurru-Kurintji Land Claim

1979

On 16 August 1977 the Central Land Council lodged an application under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 on behalf of a substantial number of Aboriginals claiming to have a traditional land claim to a large area of unalienated Crown land north-west of Alice Springs and extending almost to the border of Western Australia.

It was described as 'the Walbiri Land Claim' although the claimants included members of the Kartangarurru and Kurintji tribes as well.
