- In the 2009-10 Budget, the Commonwealth provided $156.6 million in funding to enable the Northern Territory Government to replace Australian Federal Police officers deployed in remote communities and to provide further support for the additional police presence established as part of Closing the Gap in the Northern Territory.
- This 2010-11 measure provides an additional $9.2 million over two years for additional Australian Federal Police support to those communities during the transition period as new Northern Territory Police are trained and deployed.

Background
- In total, through the 2009-10 and 2010-11 Budgets, $165.8 million has been provided for the transition from the Australian Federal Police to the Northern Territory Police over three years from 2009-10 to 2011-12 and to provide further support for the additional police presence established as part of Closing the Gap in the Northern Territory.
- The Australian Government is funding over 60 additional positions deployed as part of Closing the Gap in the Northern Territory.
Implementation
- The Northern Territory Police are recruiting and training additional police officers to replace the Australian Federal Police officers currently seconded to the Northern Territory Police. Thirty Northern Territory police officers have so far completed training with the assistance of the Australian Government’s additional funding.
Total Government Funding
- The Government is committing $9.2 million over two years to the initiative.
