International Indigenous Issues – Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

The Australian Government supports Indigenous Australians to participate in international forums, including those under the auspices of the United Nations (UN).

On 3 April 2009, the Minister for Indigenous Affairs made a Statement on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, agreed by the UN on 13 September 2007, is a statement of support for the rights of Indigenous people and of commitment to move in certain directions. The Declaration is subject to all existing international and Australian laws. It is an aspirational rather than binding document.
