Indigenous Family Safety

Introduction

The Australian Government announced the Indigenous Family Safety Agenda on 17 July 2010 to address the high rates of family violence in Indigenous communities.

The Agenda focuses on four priority areas:

  1. reduce alcohol related family violence;
  2. reduce incidents of violence through more effective policing;
  3. strengthen social norms against violence; and,
  4. improve coordination of support services to aid the recovery of people who experience or witness violence.

To support the implementation of the Indigenous Family Safety Agenda the Indigenous Family Safety funding stream was created by merging the Family Violence Partnership Program (FVPP) and the Family Violence Regional Activities Program (FVRAP).

Indigenous Family Safety funding focuses on two Agenda priorities:

  • to strengthen social norms against violence; and
  • to improve coordination of support services to aid the recovery of people who experience violence.

Indigenous Family Safety is an activity of the Family and Children Services stream of the Family Support Program.

Indigenous Family Safety Funding 2011-12

New Program Guidelines have been developed under the Family Support Program to guide the implementation of Indigenous Family Safety funding.

Funding for 2011-12 has been directed to selected service providers who have previously been delivering services under FVPP and FVRAP.

Selected service providers were offered funding to deliver their current services under the Indigenous Family Safety guidelines.

The timing of future funding rounds is not known at this stage.  Future funding will be distributed based on Government policy priorities and the needs of Indigenous people impacted by family violence.  Depending on these requirements and available services in target locations, open and direct selection processes may be used to select new providers.
