National Social Housing Surveys

The National Social Housing Survey (formerly the National Survey of Customer Satisfaction with Housing Assistance), has been conducted since 1996. Public housing tenants were surveyed annually until 2001, and are now being surveyed every two years. After a pilot survey in 1998, a similar survey of community housing tenants was introduced in 2001 and was repeated in 2002. Community housing tenants will now also be surveyed every two years.

These surveys began as customer satisfaction surveys and have gradually been expanded to obtain tenant opinions on other aspects of housing provided, such as the level of amenity and proximity to services. New questions on labour force participation were introduced in 2003.

Reports from 2005 onwards are available on the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare website.

The surveys are a joint Commonwealth-State intiative, with funding provided by state housing departments.
