The Statement of Intent demonstrates a commitment by a number of industry leaders, employment specialists and peak bodies to the recognition of people with disability as valued employees and customers. Signatories have participated in a forum aimed at investigating strategies for increasing private sector engagement with disability, chaired by the former Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children’s Services, the Hon Bill Shorten MP.
It supports the business case for employing people with disability and references research (e.g. Graffam, Shinkfield, Smith and Polzon 2002) which demonstrates employees with disability are reliable, have comparably low rates of sick leave and have good safety and attendance records.
