The Australian Government is committed to ensuring people with disabilities, and their families and carers, are recognised and encouraged to participate in the community.
- Commonwealth, state and territory agreements
A number of agreements between the Australian Government and state and territory governments have been signed to assist people with disability, and their families and carers.
- Disability Employment Assistance Funding Agreement for 2007-10
The Department provides funding under the Disability Services Act 1986 (Cth) to Business Services to provide supported employment assistance to people with disability.
- Disability Services Census
Information on the type and location of all government-funded disability services and the characteristic of people using the services.
- International participation in disability issues
The Department works with international organisations, including the United Nations, on policy development and research for international disabilities issues.
- International Day of People with Disability
International Day of People with Disability is celebrated on 3 December each year. It was established to promote awareness of disability issues and the abilities of people with disability.
- Commonwealth Disability Strategy - introduction
The Commonwealth Disability Strategy was introduced in 1994 to help Australian Government agencies meet their obligations under the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
- Disability Investment Group
The Disability Investment Group was announced on 23 April 2008. Its terms of reference include identifying opportunities to increase private sector involvement and investment in the funding of disability services and related infrastructure, including identifying barriers to this and ways in which these barriers might be overcome.
