Financial responsibilities of parenthood - development of an education resource

What's New?

This measure will invest in the development of a new resource for high school students to ensure that they have access to information on the financial implications of having a baby and are not mistakenly attracted to parenthood by the prospect of short term financial gain.

The resource will provide comprehensive information to enable young people to make informed choices about having a child. Information will be provided on the costs associated with raising a child and will assist parents and teachers to facilitate discussion around these issues.

Background

This measure will support other changes to the payment of the Baby Bonus, including the mandatory payment by instalments to claimants under the age of 18 years from 1 July 2007.

Implementation:

It is intended that the resource will be available for use in schools from the commencement of the 2008 school year.

Total Government Funding:

Total funding for this measure will be $0.5 million in the 2007-08 financial year.
