Number 31: Intergenerational reliance on income support: psychosocial factors and their measurement

July 2007

by Helen Berry, Emma George, Peter Butterworth, Bryan Rodgers and Tanya Caldwell

The paper identifies nine psychosocial factors that explain reliance on income support from one generation to the next. Psychosocial factors are defined as psychological development and social factors and the relationship and interaction between the two.

Each of the nine factors is discussed in turn, including the relationship between the factor and income support reliance of parents and children. This is followed by a review of appropriate questionnaire-based measures for each factor.

The paper concludes by drawing together the connections between the factors in five core themes, followed by an examination of policy and program development implications.
