Key Elements

This measure provides for the employment of up to 65 Government Business Managers (GBMs) in 72 of the 73 prescribed communities across the Northern Territory (NT). GBMs are the face of the Australian Government Northern Territory Emergency Response (NTER) and facilitate the roll out of Australian Government and NT Government NTER initiatives.

Background

The placement of GBMs is a critical element of the implementation of NTER initiatives. Their role includes:

providing the key liaison and consultation point in communities, including communicating the NTER measures at the local level, engaging with elders, and working collaboratively with other government representatives, including at the Territory and local levels;
managing and coordinating the day-to-day activities of staff from different Australian Government agencies based in the community; and
providing feedback on progress and local issues and concerns to government and to the NTER Operations Centre. Their knowledge and information guides coordinated government action and decision making tailored to the particular needs of a community.

The community of Amoonguna is a prescribed community whose needs are addressed by the Alice Springs Indigenous Coordination Centre.

Implementation

GBMs can serve more than one community where this is logistically possible. Responsibility for more than one township means that around 65 GBMs are needed to cover the 72 prescribed communities. It is anticipated that all 65 will be in place by mid 2008.

Total Government Funding

The Australian Government has committed total funds of $30.8 million in 2008-09. Further activity will be informed by the outcomes of the NTER review later this year.
