Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR)
The Australian Government has committed $2.3 million to operate 10 recently established crèches. This measure will ensure that Indigenous families and their young children living in regional and remote Northern Territory can continue to benefit from access to crèche services. Access to early childhood programs will lead to improvements in life outcomes with young children experiencing learning and development opportunities from an early age leading to a smoother transition to school, tertiary studies and employment.
The ongoing operational funding for the crèches will be administered through the Child Care Services Support Program (CCSSP) administered by DEEWR. Under the CCSSP, the Australian Government provides financial and other support to child care services in areas of market breakdown. The 10 new crèches provide a flexible form of child care for young children. Other types of child care services supported under the CCSSP include long day care, outside school hour's care, family day care, in-home care and occasional care.
This funding will enable 10 recently established services to continue to operate in 2008-09.
The Australian Government has committed total funds of $2.3 million in 2008-09. Further activity will be informed by the outcomes of the Northern Territory Emergency Response review later this year.
